Before anything: do you need it?

EU citizens, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland no need visa: The certificate of registration of a citizen of the Union is enough for them (with media accreditation and health coverage). The non-lucrative visa is for nationals of third countries - including the United Kingdom - who want to spend more than 90 days per semester allowed by the Schengen rule.

The requirements that decide

Economic means

You must prove income or savings equivalent to the 400% of the annual IPREM for the owner (in the surroundings of the 28.800 € per year with recent values) plus one 100% additional for each family member in charge. They serve pensions, income, investments or sufficient bank balance; what doesn't work is counting on working, because this visa expressly prohibits it (It does allow you to manage your assets or collect income from abroad).

Private health insurance

Health policy with full coverage in Spain, with insurer authorized to operate here and, as a general criterion, without co-payments or relevant deficiencies. Pensioner agreements (like the European S1) they have their own rules; standard visa applicant needs private policy.

The rest of the file

Criminal record certificate for the last few years apostilled and translated, medical certificate, form and fees, and accommodation accreditation in Spain — this is where your home is owned (or your purchase in progress) strengthens the file.

Where and how to order

Always in the Spanish consulate of your country of residence — cannot be requested from Spain as a tourist. Visa granted, you enter, you get your TIE (foreigner's identity card) and the first authorization lasts one year, renewable for periods of two years (2+2) until you can access long-term residence at five.
